Swedish road signs: how to learn signs, markings and signals
Learn what a sign means, where it applies and what you need to do next—not only its shape or colour.
Read the traffic environment
Traffic signs, road markings and signals work together to regulate, warn or guide road users. A road marking can be meaningful on its own or together with a sign or other traffic device.
Learn signs in groups
- Warning signs: what risk may be ahead?
- Priority signs: who must give way?
- Prohibitory and mandatory signs: what may or must you do?
- Information and direction signs: what does the road arrangement tell you?
- Road markings: what does the line, arrow or symbol require?
Avoid recognition-only practice
Do not stop at naming a sign. Ask where it applies, whether there is a supplementary plate, what road users it affects and what you must do before the next decision point.
Use the sign library
Study one group at a time, then meet the same signs in a traffic situation and a practice question. That connects the sign to the action it requires.
