Give way and the right-hand rule in Sweden
Priority is about reading the whole situation early enough to slow down or stop safely.
What giving way means
Giving way means slowing down or stopping in good time. You may continue only when doing so does not create danger or obstruction for the other road user.
The right-hand rule
When two vehicle paths cross, you must give way to a vehicle approaching from your right. The rule can apply at three-way junctions, in car parks and in other open areas, but you still have a duty of care.
Look for rules that decide priority first
- Instructions from police or traffic signals
- Road signs and road markings, including give-way and stop lines
- Priority-road rules and other rules that apply in the situation
- Only then: the right-hand rule when two vehicle paths cross
A reliable routine
Reduce speed before the junction, identify all approaching road users, find the sign or rule that governs the place, then proceed only when your movement does not hinder anyone.
